For those of you following closely, we have been working on creating a really nice play-spot on the Competition Channel. We rearranged two peg boards to change the flow of the water and make a really nice hole. Here are some shots of what it looked like with water.

The general consensus is that it needs a little more work. It still looks flushy, but we have yet to try it out!

Well, not yet. One of the peg boards shifted. Before that we were close, but still have more to do to hone it in. We’re going to add some rocks to the eddies on the river left and river right to slow the eddies down.

    James,
First off YES! and thanks. My wife (Samantha) and I have been working with the center, mostly Hepp and Fergus over the past year, we run the WorldKayak Throwdowns, and this is what we really needed. Keep us posted. Any chance of doing something to second drop on the instructional channel, another couple inches of water to make that hole deeper would be sweet, maybe just by backing it up a bit and slowing the players right eddy down, just a thought. Thanks.

    Hey Jason!

Thanks for reading! It’s good to know people are checking out the site! I’ve seen some of your Throwdowns and even have some video of Fergus’s ride at M-Wave from one of them. As far as I know, right now there isn’t much talk about changing a bunch of other stuff in the channels. Right now, we’re set to drain the ponds in January. We may be fussing with some stuff in the channels then, but as for right now we’re trying to hone in the spot under the bridge. It’s not going quite as easily as I think we hoped, but we’re definitely making progress. One of the big peg boards moved, and eventually we have to get the backhoe back down the channel and move it back. I think we’re going to add rocks, and other obstructions to slow the water in the eddies down and also remove some of the current concrete on the sides of the drop to help channel more of the water into the middle. Thanks again for reading! I’m going to put your blog on my Friends of Whitewater Wishes section!

Thanks for the link up. By the way Angela’s real name is the Honey-Limbed Cougar, you can ask her why. Let me know if the center needs help with manual labor stuff in the channels, I know a bunch of the throwdowners (new word) would be game to help out movings rocks. Don’t forget about sand bags, the Reno Park used them to test out ideas temporarily before putting rocks/concrete/peg board things in permanently. Does Fergus/Center still need some palastic drums, I think for a floating dock on the Catawaba?

    Hey Jason,

I’ll have to ask about that for sure! Sounds like a great story! As far as I know, we’re good, but I’ll mention it to my boss. I hear you’re making some cool strap system to tie boats on the roof? I’m very interested in that! We have a REALLY big jack hammer that came in (it’s mounted on treads to give you an idea). I think we’re going to start chiseling with that in the next few days. I’m kayaking tomorrow, but if I’m around I’ll be taking more pics and doing more write ups! Thanks again for reading!
